The Hancock County Gun Club in cooperation with Illini West High School in Carthage, Illinois have established a new recognized sport at the school called the "Scholastic Clay Target Program". This is a High School Trap Shooting sport which allows students who can not or do not want to participate in other recognized sports to participate in a safe, wholesome, and competitive sport. They are taught skills they can use for a lifetime. They learn safe and responsible gun handling.
By design, this sports program is at very little cost to the students and parents. The club holds different fund raisers to support the program and has purchased 5 Remington 1100 Trap Shotguns for use by the students who do not have a shotgun. The club also provides ammunition and targets.
Students are expected to successfully complete a 10 hour NRA Shotgun Course, attend practices, and keep school grades at an acceptable level to participate in the program. Practices are weekly throughout spring, summer, and fall.
The SCTP is designed to instill in young people a set of personal values and character traits that teaches fair play, compassionate understanding, individual responsibility, sportsmanship, self-discipline, and personal commmitment - qualities necessary to become successful and contributing members of society.
Competition is a part of the SCTP, but it is not the program's underlying principle. The "win at all cost" philosophy has no place in the SCTP. Striving to win while playing by the rules does. It is the DUTY of everyone involoved in the SCTP - coaches, parents, and participants - to be role models for SCTP team members to emulate by upholding high moral and ethical standards of personal conduct.
We have four volunteer cerfitifed instructor/coaches.
